Each time you apply for a Schengen visa, the respective consulate will ask for a no-objection employment letter. This is in addition to all the other documents and is an important document that many people overlook, only to end up with a visa rejection.

An employment letter is an official letter that confirms your employer and position and provides the Schengen country with a reference contact in case they need one. This is usually on your employer's letterhead. This is often used interchangeably with a No Objection Letter - both have the same objective of conveying your employment information and giving you official permission to go on leave.

Schengen states want to make sure that you are approved to leave work for the duration of your travels, and that you've the incentive to return back to the US given that you're still employed.

Apply For The 5 Year Multiple Entry Visa

Some frequent travelers consider the Schengen 5-Year Multiple Entry Visa (MEV) almost as good as gold.

Simple. It has plenty of advantages for frequent travelers. A popular benefit is that you can travel to and from the Schengen Area as many times as you like, provided you don't break the 90/180-day Schengen rule.

For a frequent traveler like myself, this is exciting stuff!

At first glance, this type of visa may mean nothing to you (yet). However, in this post, I'll discuss the Schengen 5-Year Multiple-Entry Visa and why you would want to apply for one.

What Is The Schengen 5-Year Multiple-Entry Visa (MEV)?

The Schengen 5-Year MEV is a short-stay visa that allows you to enter the Schengen Zone multiple times. So, as the name suggests, you have "multiple entries."

Unlike other multiple-entry visas, the 5-Year MEV can be used for a total of 5 years. Meaning that you can enter the Schengen Area as many times as you like within 5 years.

Be mindful that you still need to comply with the 90/180-day Schengen rule. Simply put, you're only allowed to visit the Schengen Member States for a maximum of 90 days within every 180-day period. Remember, overstaying in the Schengen Area could lead to heavy fines or even a ban.

What Are The Benefits Of The Schengen 5-Year Multiple-Entry Visa?

Now that you know the basics of the 5-Year MEV, let's look at the benefits of such a visa and why you should consider applying for one.

As I previously mentioned, you can enter the Schengen Area multiple times without worrying about crossing any legal boundaries.

At first, this might not seem like something to get excited about. However, this allows you to travel to multiple Schengen Countries and sidestep the 90/180-day Schengen rule.

You could potentially travel to the Schengen Area for more than 130 days without breaking the 90/180-day Schengen rule.

The Schengen 5-Year Multiple Entry Visa remains a Schengen Visa. Therefore, you can travel to any one of the 26 Schengen Member States as many times as you want.

These Schengen States within the European Union include:

Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.

If you travel often, you'll understand why this is included as a benefit.

Applying for a Schengen Visa can be tedious, especially if you travel frequently. With the 5-Year MEV, you only need to complete your Schengen Visa application once. After it's been approved, your visa will be valid for 5 years, so you don't need to apply for another Schengen Visa within 5 years.

In short, more time traveling, less time applying for visas.

Who Is Eligible To Apply For A 5-Year Multiple Entry Visa?

Here's the catch, not everyone can apply for a 5-Year MEV. There are specific eligibility requirements you need to meet. I'll first discuss the basic requirements and then move on to the more specific requirements.

The more standard requirements are as follows:

You must have a valid reason for why you want to enter the Schengen Area multiple times. These can include visiting family members, business purposes, etc.

You must have a clean Schengen Visa history, which means you've never overstayed or worked illegally within the Schengen area.

You must have a clean criminal record to qualify for the 5-Year MEV (or any other MEV).

Travel insurance is a mandatory requirement for your first trip to the Schengen Zone (with your MEV).

So, you now know the basic requirements for a multiple-entry visa. Now it's time to understand what makes you eligible to apply for the 5-Year MEV.

In order to qualify for a 5-Year Multiple Entry Visa:

"(c) for a validity period of five years, provided that the applicant has obtained and lawfully used a previous multiple-entry visa valid for two years within the previous three years." - REGULATION (EC) No 810/2009, Article 24

To understand the statement mentioned above, I first need to explain 2 more types of multiple-entry visas that are similar to the 5-Year MEV:

Quick note: The 1 Year, 3 Year, and 5-Year MEVs are essentially the same. The only difference is the validity period of each visa. For example, the 1-Year MEV is only valid for 1 year.

You are eligible to receive a 1-Year MEV if you have previously obtained and used 3 Schengen Visas in the past year. When applying for the 1-Year MEV, you'll need to submit copies of your previous Schengen Visas and proof of your last Schengen travels.

For the 3-Year MEV, you need to have previously used a multiple entry visa valid for 1 year within the past 2 years. Therefore, within the past 2 years of traveling to the Schengen Area, you must have obtained and used a 1-Year MEV.

Now that you know the basics of the other types of MEVs, let's backtrack to the initial question.

You're eligible to apply for a 5-Year MEV if you've previously obtained and used a 3-Year MEV in the past 3 years.

How to Apply for a Family Bahamas Health Visa

The Top Hacks to Get A Schengen Visa Quickly

Getting a Schengen visa to travel to Europe can be a long, challenging, and frustrating process. Fortunately, however, there are a few hacks that you can use to get one relatively easily and quickly.

Hack #2: Apply for a Schengen Visa for Germany

Here's the trick most people miss. Germany is one of the few select Schengen countries that lets you mail-in applications if you've been to the Schengen-area in the last five years. This trick can save you a day's worth of trouble. It's even more helpful when you don't live in a city with a German consulate and travel to one to attend the visa interview.

Even if your destination in Europe is not Germany, I still recommend going this route because it's so much easier getting everything done without going for a visa interview.

That said, mailing in your visa application doesn't come without its troubles. In addition to all the paperwork, you need to get your application notarized - Germany wants to know that it is really you that's applying. If you haven't done this before, it's a painful and expensive exercise - find a notary near you, go to one, wait in line, pay them $40-$50 and get a stamp. If you live near a FedEx or a UPS store, you can save yourself a lot of time here since most of them have a public notary but make sure to check before. Or you can use Atlys to talk to one over video and get your application notarized instantly.

Quick note: Applying to another Schengen Country is by far the easiest way to speed up the Schengen Visa application process. Hack #3: Apply at a smaller Schengen country if your trip is imminent

While Hack #2 is convenient, it still takes around two weeks to get your passport back. For last-minute travelers, this can be too late. In such situations, I recommend applying for a Schengen visa in a smaller country. My preference is Luxembourg - you have to email them with your dates, and they usually make a concerted effort to get your passport back in time. Of course, you have to 'tweak' the itineraries to be in the country you're applying to, but that's okay. Once you get your Schengen visa, you are free to travel to any of the Schengen countries.

I say this is a hack because you can save a lot of time and money by not dealing with VFS. They are known for their terrible customer experience - often charge exorbitantly on top of the visa fees (such as charging $35 for SMS updates), not having enough appointment slots, and delay sending your applications through to the embassies for processing.

It's pretty easy to avoid them - pick from countries they don't support, like Germany, Spain, or Italy.

It's easier to work with the embassy staff directly than with VFS customer support.

Hack #5: Apply for a work visa if you can

If your employer has an office in the Schengen area, apply for a work visa. It's the same as the tourist visa, but it can significantly increase your odds of getting a 1-year Schengen visa. All you have to do is have 'needs to travel occasionally for business-related meetings...' on your invitation letter. It is a little bit more work than applying for a travel visa, but it's worth it if you can get a longer-term Schengen visa.

If you are applying for a visa for the first time, there's a slight chance that your visa may be rejected. There are many reasons why, but the consulate can't be sure that you will return after you leave.

To overcome this hurdle, you can write a support letter to the consulate. The letter needs to be from a reputable and trustworthy source like your place of employment, your bank, your landlord, or another trusted source.

This is not a guarantee, but it can help you in your quest for a Schengen visa.

The earlier you apply for a visa, the better. In the past, it wasn't easy to get a Schengen visa in a short time. But things have changed - you can now mail in your visa application as long as you have the documents ready.

I've seen numerous visas being rejected because applicants waited until the last minute to apply and missed an essential document in a hurry. A good rule of thumb is 3-4 weeks before.

Visa appointments usually run late, and they also tend to be scheduled during lunchtime. For this reason, it's often best to get the earliest appointment you can. Just be cautious, scheduling a visa appointment is not as simple as a phone call. You may need to schedule your appointment ahead of time to ensure you get the appointment slot you want. The best time to go is in the morning before everyone starts to move around town.

Hack #9: Reserve an appointment for a Residency visa

Many Schengen countries have wide appointment availability for a residency visa. While these slots are meant for residency/nomad visa applicants, you can still reserve them. Then, on the appointment day, act as if you didn't know the difference and urge them to consider your application - show them your flight tickets and explain how much money you stand to lose. More often than not, they'll oblige.

The United States banned the entry of all non-immigrant Indians on April 30, 2021, through a Presidential Proclamation.

For context, Indian citizens possessing non-immigrant visas come under the ambit of this Proclamation:

F1, J1, M1 Visa Holders, unless their program starts on August 1 or later.

However some H-1Bs, L-1s and O-1s may qualify for a National Interest Exception which would allow you to travel to the US directly despite the ban.

There has been a lot of buzz recently regarding a new European Union travel authorization system, ETIAS.

The system was first proposed five years ago. However, progress has accelerated due to terrorist incidents in France and Belgium. This proved that more strict security measures are required in the region.

The proposed system is the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS). It is based on the ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization), a comparable visa waiver system used in the United States.

The system's goal is to collect information on visa-free tourists to the European Union and ensure that people who pose a security risk are identified before traveling to the Schengen Area.

The European Union's central purpose is to strengthen its inhabitants' external and internal security. This is done by establishing a centralized system for issuing travel authorizations to E.U. visitors and tracking their movements within the Schengen zone.

Working out the difference between the European Union (E.U.) and the Schengen zone is one of the more puzzling aspects for anyone visiting the E.U. from other countries.

The European Union (E.U.) comprises of 27 member nation-states in Europe. This number has grown over time as one nation after another has applied for; and then been granted membership.

The Schengen zone encompasses nearly all of the European Union's member states. However, not every E.U. country is a member of Schengen, and it gets even more complicated because not every Schengen country is a member of the E.U.

The Schengen zone, which has 26 members, was established to allow the free movement of people across national borders within the Schengen zone - this is known as the Schengen Agreement. These countries include:

What Is The Difference Between ETIAS And A Schengen Visa?

ETIAS is a new type of travel authorization designed for short-term tourist or business visitors to Europe who currently enjoys visa-free travel.

These visitors come from various countries, including the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, among others. For more information about the ETIAS system, you can check out the Europa.eu official website.

The Schengen Visa is a travel authorization that allows non-EU residents to visit the Schengen Memember States.

The Schengen Visa is specifically issued to citizens that don't enjoy visa-free travel to the Schengen Area. Whereas, ETIAS is issued to citizens/nationals who enjoy the benefit of visa-free travel to the EU and Schengen Area.

Now that you have insight into what an ETIAS visa waiver is, we can dig a little deeper into the actual application process.

Citizens who enjoy visa-free travel to E.U. Countries:

Individuals who are not E.U. citizens but enjoy visa-free travel must apply for ETIAS. These visitors are from countries like the United States, Canada, and Ukraine.

Citizens from third countries (Non-EU citizens)

Citizens from a third-world country that enjoy visa-free travel must apply for an ETIAS. These are countries such as Albania, Japan, and Singapore.

Citizens from the E.U., EEA, and the Schengen Area

Citizens from the E.U., EEA and other the Schengen Area do not have to apply for an ETIAS.

Citizens that have to apply for a Schengen Visa

Citizens from external borders outside the E.U. and the Schengen Area, who do not enjoy visa-free travel, do not have to apply for an ETIAS. However, these citizens still need to apply for a Schengen Visa.

British citizens will need to apply for an ETIAS to enter participating European countries for less than 90 days. This will be for general tourism, business travel, transit, or medical reasons.

Citizens of the United Kingdom must complete an ETIAS application before boarding an aircraft, sea carrier, or coach vehicle bound for Europe in November 2023. This includes those who will only be transiting through Europe en route to other destinations.

Any British citizen who wishes to visit Europe for more than 90 days or for purposes other than those permitted under the ETIAS program must apply for a Schengen visa.
