Generally, all US visa applicants between 14 and 79, except those from the Visa Waiver partner countries, must attend an in-person visa interview at the US Embassy. In fact, the interview is one of the most critical parts of the US visa application process. It is the face-to-face meeting with a consular officer that ultimately determines whether your visa will be approved or denied!

Therefore, we understand that this can be a stressful experience for some. You might be worried about what questions will be asked, how to respond, and more. Worry not; Atlys is here to assist you. To help you navigate the US visa interview step, here is an overview of common questions and tips to help you prepare for your B1/B2 visa interview in 2024.

B1/B2 Visa Interview Questions and Answers:

Some of the most frequently asked questions in the US visa interview are:

1. What is the purpose of your visit to the US?

Clearly state your purpose of travel to the US, whether for business, tourism, or visiting family. Provide additional information only when asked.

2. Have you been to the US before?

Feel free to answer with a simple yes or no. If the consulate officer asks for more details, then you tell them when you visited and the purpose of your visit.

3. Do you have any relatives in the US?

If you have any relatives living in the US, you must provide their information and their relationship with you. Otherwise, you can answer simply no.

4. Where will you be staying in the USA?

Provide your hotel details or the full address of where you will be staying with friends or relatives. Ensure this matches the information that you provided in your DS-160 form.

5. How will you fund your visit to the US?

If self-sponsored, explain how you will finance your trip. If your trip is sponsored by a friend or relative, let the officer know. Please note that, lately, the applicants have also been asked for general information about their sponsors. Ensure you know their basic details, like address and employment status.

6. What is your profession? How much do you earn?

Provide details about your job, including your employer, role, and income. Remember to carry the supporting documents.

7. How much do you think your stay in America will cost you?

Provide an estimate of your total expenses, including accommodation, meals, transportation, and other activities. Please note that you must have proof of sufficient funds ready in case the officer requests.

8. Why have you chosen this particular time to travel to the USA?

Let the officer know why this timing is important for your trip, whether for business or personal reasons. For example, if your business workshop is scheduled for this time, you can state this reason.

9. How long will you be staying in the US?

State the number of days you plan to stay. Please note the consular officer already knows the answer through your visa application, so you must state the duration that you filled in your DS-160 form.

10. Why are you planning to stay in the country for this long?

This query is usually asked when you have applied for a visa with a stay longer than 6 months. Make sure you have a strong reason (for example, cases of longer medical treatment) to ask for a longer stay.

11. Who will look after your family/property while you are away?

Mention honestly the arrangements you have made for your family or property’s care in your absence. You can let the officer know whether it’s your spouse, trusted family member or business partner. This shows the consular officer that you have considered your responsibilities and have made proper temporary arrangements.

12. Is there anyone accompanying you during your visit?

If you are travelling alone, mention that. If you will be travelling with others, explain to the consular officer whether they are applying as your dependents and clarify your relationship with them.

 13. Have you booked your flight tickets?

Although the US government recommends not booking flight tickets before visa approval, answer honestly. If you answer yes, make sure that you have proof of the same to present. Otherwise, simply answer no.

14. Have you travelled abroad before?

If yes, mention the countries that you have visited recently or the last trip that you took.

15. Are you planning to return to your home country?

Please note this question is asked so that you can convince the consular officer that you have strong ties with your country and, by any means, you will not stay in the US longer than your intended stay. You can do this by highlighting family, job, and other commitments.

Tips for a successful US visa interview

  • Know the details: Most of the interview questions are asked to confirm the information provided on your DS-160 form. Ensure all your answers match the information provided in the visa application form and supporting documents.

  • Practice common questions: It is always best to do a quick rehearsal of the most frequently asked questions, which will boost your confidence.

  • Dress appropriately: Although the US government does not provide a formal dress code, it is always best to wear professional attire to make a good impression.

  • Show strong ties to your home country: Make sure to clearly highlight your commitment to your family and job, which will demonstrate your intention to return home.

  • Have strong financial proof: You must have sufficient balance in your bank account to assure the officer that you can sustain your stay and, in any case, you would not become a liability to the US government.

Final comment

Apart from these US travel visa interview questions, they can ask you additional questions to ensure you are mentally and physically sound enough to visit the US. Remember, the key is to be confident, consistent and honest! Additionally, ensure that you are carrying all the supporting documents, including your financial proof, itinerary, sponsor's details, etc., to provide when the officer asks readily.
