About The Belgian Passport

The Belgian passport (Belgisch paspoort / Passeport belge / Belgischer Reisepass) is a well-regarded travel document that offers its holders global mobility, EU citizenship rights, and consular protection. Issued by the FPS Foreign Affairs, it serves as official proof of Belgian nationality and allows seamless international travel in line with visa requirements.

Belgian passport with a global mobility score of 188, offers visa-free access to 151 countries and territories, visa-on-arrival access to 24 countries, ETA access to 13 countries, and E-visa access to 17 countries. In 2025, the Belgian passport ranks 4th in the world, up from 6th position in 2023.

All Belgian citizens are also citizens of the European Union, giving them the right to live, work, and move freely across EU member states, the European Economic Area (EEA), and Switzerland. This right is protected under Article 21 of the EU Treaty, making the Belgian passport a gateway to broader European opportunities.

In 2022, Belgium introduced a newly designed passport featuring iconic illustrations from beloved Belgian comic characters like Tintin, The Smurfs, and Lucky Luke. This creative redesign celebrates Belgium’s cultural legacy in the world of comics, while also incorporating advanced security features to enhance safety.

What Does a Belgian Passport Look Like?

At the top, it reads "European Union" in French, Dutch, and German, Belgium’s official languages, followed by "Kingdom of Belgium" in the same three languages. The centre features the Belgian coat of arms, symbolising the monarchy.

Near the bottom, the word "Passport" is also displayed in all three languages - French: Passeport, Dutch: Paspoort, and German: Reisepass.
