The Kenyan Passport

The Kenyan passport is the official travel document issued to citizens for international travel. As of 2025, the Kenyan passport is ranked 73rd on the Passport Index, offering visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 71 countries. The Kenyan passport ranked 72nd in 2023, 74th in 2024, and 73rd in 2025. This reflects Kenya’s growing diplomatic efforts and increasing international mobility within Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, and the Pacific. While the passport does not provide the same level of access as higher-ranked countries, it remains a valuable travel document within the region. The Kenyan government continues to invest in digital infrastructure and international partnerships to improve travel access for its citizens.

The Directorate of Immigration Services under the Ministry of Interior and National Administration is responsible for issuing Kenyan passports. Kenya is not a member of the European Union or the Schengen Area, so Kenyan citizens must apply for visas before traveling to most parts of Europe and North America. However, Kenya maintains bilateral agreements and participates in regional blocs like the East African Community, which facilitate easier movement across neighboring countries.

Passport Validity for Adults and Children

The validity of a Kenyan passport depends on the age of the passport holder:

  • Adults (age 18 and older): Valid for 10 years from the date of issuance. Renewal is required after expiration and must follow the e-passport application process.

  • Children (under 18 years): Typically issued with a 5-year validity period to reflect changes in appearance and personal information.

All applicants must complete biometric enrolment and meet identification requirements during the application process.

Types of Kenyan Passports

Kenya issues several types of passports based on the purpose of travel and the status of the holder. All Kenyan passports are biometric and comply with international standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The different types of passports are identified by their cover color and purpose:

  • Ordinary Passport (Dark Blue Cover): Issued to regular Kenyan citizens for general travel, tourism, education, business, or family visits abroad. This is the most commonly issued type.

  • Diplomatic Passport (Red Cover): Issued to senior government officials, diplomats, and representatives of the Republic of Kenya serving abroad. It grants diplomatic privileges and immunities while on official assignments.

  • Service Passport (Green Cover): Issued to government employees or persons traveling on official duty who do not qualify for diplomatic status. It is used for official business abroad and does not grant diplomatic privileges.

All passport types in Kenya now follow the EAC format, featuring the regional emblem and allowing for easier travel among East African Community member states. The passport includes a biometric chip containing the holder’s personal data and biometric features such as fingerprints and a digital photo. Each passport includes multiple security features such as UV-sensitive ink, watermarks, and a machine-readable zone to prevent fraud and unauthorised use. The colour and type of passport are clearly marked on the front cover for identification.

Inside the Kenyan Passport

Inside the Kenyan Passport

Kenya transitioned to a biometric e-passport system in 2017. The passport contains an electronic chip that stores biometric data, including fingerprints, facial recognition, and a digital signature. The information page includes content in English, Kiswahili, and French. The following details are displayed:

  • Passport Type

  • Country Code (KEN)

  • Passport Number

  • Surname and Given Names

  • Nationality

  • Date and Place of Birth

  • Gender

  • Occupation

  • Date of Issue and Expiry

  • Issuing Authority

  • Photo and Signature of Holder

The biometric e-passport enhances security and complies with the standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). Older non-biometric passports have been phased out, and all citizens are required to use the e-passport for international travel.
