Here's what we'll discuss:
The Kenya visa is an eVisa that allows foreign nationals to enter Kenya for a specific number of days.

That's why Atlys would be the perfect fit for you. Just download the app and finish your application in under 10 minutes.
We suggest you start your Kenya visa application 15 days before departure. It leaves you with enough time to ensure you have time if there are issues with your visa applications.

It depends on what type of Kenya visa you apply for. Please check out our section on the different types of Kenya visas for more detailed information.
Here's a list of the Kenya visa fees:
Each visa application requires you to pay a 1 USD service and card handling fee.
US citizens normally get their Kenya visa within 3 days. However, you can sometimes wait up to 15 days for it to be processed.
Therefore, we suggest you start your visa application at least 15 days before your trip.
If you apply through Atlys, you can complete your visa application form within 10 minutes. It's as easy as scanning your passport's barcode and letting the app complete everything for you.
The Kenya visa does not have any specific financial requirements. However, you must be able to prove that you can support yourself financially during your trip.
Therefore, we suggest you plan a travel itinerary by looking at the various traveling costs in Kenya.
Once your itinerary is planned, you will have an estimate of what you will spend on your trip. Ensure you have more than the estimated amount to cover additional expenses.
Then, you can compile it with your required documents and submit it online.
You can use Atlys' free flight and hotel itinerary tool when completing your visa application online.
When writing this post, Kenya has no COVID-19 related entry requirements. However, according to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), Kenya is experiencing high levels of Yellow Fever.
Please ensure you are vaccinated against Yellow Fever before traveling to Kenya. Also, here's a list of other vaccines the CDC advises you to have before traveling (not mandatory):
Please note that COVID-19 entry requirements can change without notice. Therefore, we advise you to keep updated on the COVID-19 requirements.
Now that we've discussed the most important questions about the Kenya visa, it's time to look at the online application.
In this section, we'll look at the fastest way to get a Kenya visa, the requirements, and how to check your visa's validity.
Let's get to it:
The fastest way to get a visa to Kenya from the US is through the Atlys app. Atlys currently holds the record for the fastest visa application in the world with 85 seconds. Here's what we shared on Atlys' Twitter page:
Next, let's take a look at the Kenya visa requirements for US citizens. We'll discuss the required documents, passport, photo, and financial requirements.
The most important part of your Kenya visa application is your required documents.
Side note: Atlys can help you with all your required documents. Just simply download the app, select the visa you want and that's it. Atlys does the rest.
Here's a list of documents you must have before starting your Kenya visa application online:
Please keep in mind that you must submit additional documents depending on the type of Kenya visa you want.
Kenya has a few passport requirements. First off, your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date. So, for example, if your departure date is in January, your passport must be valid till the end of July.
Make sure your passport has at least 1 blank page. It's important because the border patrol officer will stamp your passport with an entry-and-exit stamp.
If you apply through the Atys app, you can scan your passport's biometric info page, and the app will complete your information. This ensures an error-free visa application.
All visa applications require you to submit a passport photo of yourself. Please ensure your photo meets the following requirements:
Use Atlys' free passport photo tool to ensure your passport photo meets the requirements.
Earlier I mentioned that Kenya does not have specific minimum financial requirements. Therefore, we suggest you create a travel itinerary and ensure you have enough funds to cover everything in your itinerary.
Once you are sure that you can cover the expenses, ensure you download a copy of your bank statement, proving you have enough funds.
All Kenya visa applications are considered eVisas. Therefore, all Kenya visa applications are completed online.
Don't worry; it's quite straightforward. Just ensure you follow our easy 7-step guide on applying for a Kenya visa online:
You can skip this 7-step guide and apply through Atlys within minutes.
The first step is to determine what type of visa you want to apply for. Although there are different types of Kenya visas, you must still apply for a Kenya eVisa.
We'll discuss the different types of Kenya visas later in this post. Be sure to check out each visa type before you start with your visa application.
Once you know which type of Kenya visa you want to apply for, you must create an account on the Kenya Government online visa portal.
Next, you must gather the required documents. As I mentioned, the type of Kenya visa you are applying for might require you to submit additional documents.
Please check out our section on the different types of Kenya visas for additional information.
After you have your documents in electronic format, you can start with your Kenya visa application.
First, start by completing the Kenya visa application form online. Please ensure you enter your details exactly as shown on your passport or other documents.
Any differences between your application form and documents can lead to a rejected visa application.
When you apply for a visa to Kenya from the US with Atlys, you can scan your passport's barcode. This neat function will ensure you have an error-free visa application form.
During this step, you must also submit your required documents. Remember, you can use Atlys' free tools if you apply for a Kenya visa through the government eVisa portal.
Here's a list of Atlys' free tools:
You're almost done with the visa application. All you need to do now is pay your Kenya visa fee.
Please take note that travelers often have issues paying the Kenya visa fee. If you are experiencing any payment issues, please check out our section on potential Kenya eVisa payment issues and solutions.
The hard part is now officially over. Now, you must sit back and wait for your Kenya visa to be processed.
As I mentioned, your visa can take between 3-15 days to process. Therefore, ensure you apply at least 2 weeks before your trip.
You'll receive an email once your Kenya eVisa has been approved. When you receive the email, ensure your print it out and save a digital copy on your phone.
You must have at least a digital and hard copy of your eVisa.
"Why?"
Believe me, you don't want to stand at Kenyan Immigration and not have a copy of your valid entry visa.
Although the Kenya visa application form is completed online, I'll walk you through some steps that might confuse you.
Let's take a look at how you must complete it online:
The first and most important part of completing the visa application form is to ensure you have your documents in electronic format. Ensure you have the following documents:
Also, remember that your documents must be in either PDF, Microsoft Word, or JPG.
Next, you must enter your details. The information you must provide will already be on the documents you gathered in the previous step.
However, you'll need to provide the following information to complete the application form:
You're almost done with the application form. One of the final steps is to upload the documents I mentioned in Step 1.
It's very easy to upload your documents. First, select "upload," then select the documents you want to upload.
After you have uploaded the documents, check that your information is correct before submitting.
The last thing you must do is pay your visa fee. Remember that each type of Kenya visa has its own visa fees. Therefore, please check the image below for the different types of Kenya visa fees:
If you don't want to go through the hassle and complete everything yourself, you can just apply through Atlys.
The Kenya visa for US citizens is valid for 90 days/3 months. You can easily check the Validity of your visa by looking at the issue date on your Kenya visa.
Here's an example:
Perhaps your visa's date of issue is 21 September 2022. Then, you must add 90 days/3 months to the issue date. You will then find that your visa is valid until 20 December 2022.
This means you can stay in Kenya from the 21st of September until 20 December.
You can also check your visa validity on the Kenya eVisa portal.
Remember that overstaying the Validity of your visa can lead to fines, penalties, or even a jail sentence. So basically, don't overstay your visa.
Here's the part you've been waiting for. In this section, we'll discuss the different types of Kenya.
After reading this section, you'll have a clear idea about which Kenya visa you must apply for and important information regarding each visa.
First, let's take a look at the Kenya Single Entry eVisa. As I mentioned, in this section, we'll cover everything you need to know about the Single Entry eVisa.
The Kenya Single Entry eVisa allows you to travel to Kenya for 90 days. However, you can only enter Kenya once with this type of visa; therefore, "Single Entry."
Let me explain with an example:
If you enter Kenya on the 21st of September 2022, you can stay until the 20th of December. However, if you leave before your visa is expired, let's say on the 15th of November.
Then, you can't return to Kenya on the same visa because it only allows for a Single Entry. Your visa will automatically expire, and you must apply for a new one.
Here's some info about the Single Entry Visa:
Validity: 90-day stay allowed in Kenya Fees: 51 USD per person Average Processing time: 48 Hours
For the Single Entry eVisa, you must submit the following documents regardless of the purpose of your trip:
Although the documents mentioned above are mandatory on all Kenya Single Entry eVisas, you must still submit additional documents depending on the purpose of your trip:
Single Entry for Tourism:
Single Entry for Business purposes:
Single Entry for Family visits:
Next, let's discuss the Kenya Transit Visa. Here's everything you need to know about the Transit visa:
The Kenya Transit eVisa allows foreign citizens to enter Kenya for short stays. However, it's only issued to passengers who want to leave the airport while waiting for a connecting flight to another country.
Let's say you travel to Madagascar but have a layover in Kenya. If you want to leave the airport, you must apply for a Transit visa. However, if you want to stay at the airport, you do not have to apply for a visa.
Here's some information about the Transit Visa:
Validity: 3-day stay allowed in Kenya Fees: 21 USD per person Average Processing time: 48 Hours
Luckily, the Transit Visa doesn't require you to submit many documents. Instead, you only need to provide the following:
Now that we've covered the Transit visa, let's look at the Kenya Courtesy eVisa.
The Courtesy eVisa is only available for Service, Diplomatic, or Official passport holders. Therefore, it will only be issued to these passport holders if you are conducting business and official duties.
Please find below some information about the Courtesy eVisa:
Validity: 90-day stay allowed in Kenya Fees: Free Average Processing time: 4-8 days
You must submit the following documents when applying for the Courtesy visa online:
You've probably heard about the East Africa Tourist Visa. But, if you haven't, here's everything you need to know:
The East Africa Tourist Visa is a joint visa for persons traveling to Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda. Therefore, you must print out your eVisa, and show it to the Immigration Officer.
Once your eVisa is approved, you'll receive an East Africa Visa sticker at the point of entry.
Please take note of the following information:
Validity: 90-day stay allowed in either Kenya, Uganda, or Rwanda Fees: 101 USD Average Processing time: 3-5 days
For the East Africa Visa, you must submit the following documents regardless of the purpose of your trip:
The 3 documents above are mandatory for each type of East Africa Visa. However, here are some extra documents you must submit depending on the type of visa you are applying for:
East Africa Visa for Tourism:
East Africa Visa for Business purposes:
East Africa Visa for Family visits:
We're almost at the end. Remember to check out the last type of Kenya eVisa. I highly suggest that US citizens apply for it. However, let's first take a look at the Multiple Entry eVisa:
The Kenya Multiple Entry eVisa is a visa that allows you to enter Kenya more than once. Unlike the Single Entry eVisa, you can enter, exit, and return again.
Let me explain by using the same example I used earlier:
If you enter Kenya on the 21st of September 2022, you can stay until the 20th of December. But, you have an emergency back home and must return.
Luckily, you do not have to apply for a new visa when you want to go back to Kenya. Instead, you can simply show your valid eVisa, and the border officer will let you through.
Although the Multiple Entry eVisa is similar to the Single Entry visa, they are different in some aspects:
Validity: 90-day stay allowed in either Kenya, Uganda, or Rwanda Fees: 101 USD Average Processing time: 48 Hours
Here's what you'll need to complete your Kenya Multiple Entry eVisa online:
Please remember that there are different types of Multiple Entry Visas depending on the purpose of your travel.
Therefore, please ensure you submit the following documents after you have determined your travel purpose:
Multiple-Entry Visa for Tourism:
Multiple-Entry Visa for Business purposes:
Multiple-Entry Visa for Family visits:
Here comes the Kenya eVisa US citizens would love. The 5-Year Multiple Entry Visa. Here's why you'll love this type of visa:
The 5-Year Multiple Entry eVisa is the perfect visa to apply for.
"Why, though?"
Because you can enter and exit Kenya multiple times for 90 days in 5 years. Remember that you can only stay for a maximum of 90 days. Therefore, you should exit Kenya before your 90 days end.
Once your 90 days are up, you must leave Kenya and can only return after about 5 days. If you return, you can stay in Kenya for another 90 days.
Please remember that the 5-Year Multiple Entry Visa is only valid for US citizens. Here's some additional information you must be aware of:
Validity: 90-day stay allowed in Kenya for 5 years Fees: 161 USD Average Processing time: 8 days
Although you can travel to Kenya for different purposes, you must submit the below documents on all 5-Year Multiple Entry Visas.
Here are the important documents you must submit online depending on the purpose of your trip:
5-Year Multiple-Entry Visa for Tourism:
5-Year Multiple-Entry for Business purposes:
5-Year Multiple-Entry Visa for Family visits:
You've probably seen I mentioned the Kenya visa costs throughout the post. In this section, I'll discuss the visa fee in-depth and how you can pay online.
Although I have mentioned the visa fees in the previous sections, here's a recap of the different visa types and their fees:
Next, let's take a look at how you can pay your visa fee online.
Remember that you must first complete the Kenya visa application form online before you can pay your visa fee. After you have completed the application form, you can start your payment.
We've noticed travelers have problems paying the Kenya Visa fee online. Remember that you can avoid this by applying through Atlys. More on that next.
There have been some mentions throughout the travel community that their visa payments get declined.
Most of the time, traveler's payments get denied because you need a 3D-secured bank card.
Therefore, we suggest you use Atlys when applying for your Kenya eVisa. Not only don't you have to worry about payment issues, but you can complete your application in under 10 minutes.
Other solutions include the following:
Feel free to check out our blog on the Kenya eVisa payment issues and solutions.
Although we've probably answered most of your questions regarding the Kenya eVisa payment portal, here's some extra information:
Yes, international payments can be processed when paying your Kenya visa fee. However, please check out the previous section for payment solutions if you have problems paying your visa fee online.
No, unfortunately, the visa processing fee is non-refundable.
We suggest you call your bank first. It's very important because the problem could be on their side. However, if your bank can't help you, we suggest you call the Kenyan Immigration Department on:
You can also send an email to the following email address:
Now that we've covered the different types of Kenya eVisas and the payment issues, let's have a look at the visa processing times:
The Kenya eVisa online processing times are more or less the same for all types of Kenya visa applications. However, here's a list of all the visa processing times:
It depends on what type of Kenya visa you are applying for. However, we suggest you start your visa application at least 2 weeks before your trip.
The reason is an earlier application ensures that you have enough time to get your visa processed. Believe me, you don't want to stress about your visa a day before your trip.
Unfortunately, there isn't an official way to check your Kenya visa status online. However, you'll receive push notifications if you apply through the Atlys app.
Your visa processing time can be delayed due to a bunch of reasons. Here are some things that can delay your visa processing time:
Now that you understand the Kenya eVisa, we must discuss what you can expect when arriving in Kenya from the US. Additionally, we'll also discuss what ports of entry you can use to enter or depart Kenya.
Although there are multiple entry and exit ports in Kenya, you can only use your eVisa at the following airports, seaports, and border crossings:
Firstly, let's take at the most popular entry ports; Airports. Here's a list of the most frequently used Kenyan airports used by international travelers:
Although it's not very common to see international travelers enter through a seaport, I'll still give you a list of seaports you can enter with your eVisa:
Most Kenya eVisas are used to entering through airports, but some travelers enter through land border crossings. We've noticed citizens who visit Kenya on the East African Tourist Visa use the border crossing more often.
Here's a list of Kenya land border crossings you can use with a Kenya eVisa:
Tanzania-Kenya border crossings:
Kenya-Uganda border crossings
Now that you know where to enter Kenya with your eVisa, let's discuss what happens when you arrive.
We know it can be stressful to arrive in a country you know nothing about. Therefore, ensure you follow our easy X-step guide:
Step 1: Collect your luggage
Although it seems self-explanatory, you must first collect your luggage once you arrive at the airport.
Next, head over to the Immigration desk.
Step 2: Present your travel documents:
Once you arrive at the Immigration desk, you must present your travel documents. If you're not sure if you have the correct documents, here's a list:
The Immigration officer might ask for additional information such as:
Step 3: Get your entry sticker
Once the Immigration officer approves your eVisa, you will be allowed to enter. And that's about it.
Although US citizens can stay in Kenya for 90 days, it's just not enough. However, Kenya has so much to offer. That's why we'll discuss how you can extend your visa in the next section.
As I mentioned earlier, Kenya has lots to offer, and you might consider extending your visa.
Just mentioning "visa extension" can lead to many questions. Therefore, here's everything you need to know about the Kenya visa extensions:
Yes, you can extend your Kenya eVisa for another 90 days.
"What!?"
It sounds too good to be true, but you can extend your stay to 180 days in Kenya. Here's how:
Firstly it's important to note that you can't apply for a Kenya visa extension online. You must apply for a visa extension at the Kenyan Immigration Department in Nairobi.
When you arrive at the Kenyan Immigration Department, you must have the following required documents:
The visa extension application is very quick and easy. But, first, you must go to the Kenyan Department of Immigration and tell them you want to renew your visa.
Next, present your documents and start completing the visa extension application form.
After you've completed the form, you must pay a 22 USD visa extension fee. They say you can pay with your debit or credit card. However, I suggest you take cash if the card machines don't work.
The last thing is to wait for your visa to be processed. Once it's processed, you'll receive an email with your approved visa.
Although you can only apply for a Kenya visa online, it's still important we discuss the Kenya Embassies in the US.
There is only 1 Kenyan Embassy in the USA and 2 Kenyan Consulates. We'll discuss the important information about the Embassy and Consulates next:
No. Since January 2021, Kenya only processes eVisa applications. As a result, the Kenyan Department of Immigration discontinued paper visa applications and the Kenya Visa on Arrival.
You can contact the Kenya Embassy in Washington DC through the following communication portals:
As I mentioned earlier, there is only 1 Kenyan Embassy in the US. Therefore, please find below the location of the Kenya Embassy and Consulates:
Although Kenya has low visa-rejection rates, there are cases where visas were denied. However, don't stress too much because this section will cover everything you need to know about Kenya visa rejections.
Yes, your Kenya visa application can be rejected if you make mistakes on the application form. However, there are some other reasons why Kenya visas get rejected.

Therefore, in this section, we'll discuss some important information when traveling to Kenya. We'll discuss how safe it is to travel to Kenya, the best of Kenya, and some travel tips.
Let's get to it:
First, we must discuss what you can expect when traveling to Kenya. We know you have questions about safety and COVID-19 requirements.
Don't worry because that's exactly what we'll discuss next:
Yes, Kenya is safe. Although the US State Department issued a long-standing travel recommendation, it only applies to extremely particular and strictly non-tourist locations in the country's far east.
However, it is not a total ban, and most of Kenya is safe to visit. In fact, thousands of American tourists visit Kenya's great wildlife reserves each year, including the Amboseli, Samburu, Laikipia, and Masai Mara.
Currently, Kenya DOES NOT have any COVID-19 entry requirements. However, Kenya may implement COVID-19 entry requirements without notice. Therefore, we suggest you stay updated on the latest rules and regulations.
Now that we've covered most of the serious stuff, let's get to some fun travel information:
From July through September, the country's dry season, which also corresponds with the Great Migration of wildebeest and zebra, is one of the greatest seasons to visit Kenya.
On the other hand, the rainy seasons are ideal for visiting because there are fewer tourists and you can observe the stunning emerald vegetation.
