Visa Waiver Program
What is the Visa Waiver Program (VWP)?
The Visa Waiver Program (VWP), administered by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in consultation with the State Department, allows citizens of 41 countries to travel to the United States for business or tourism for stays of up to 90 days without a visa. In return, those 41 countries have to allow people from the United States to visit their countries for a similar amount of time without needing a visa, whether for business or tourism purposes.
Eligibility Criteria:
To qualify for the VWP, travellers must be citizens of participating countries, have a valid passport, and meet specific eligibility requirements set by the destination country. Additionally, travellers must intend to stay for a short duration (usually up to 90 days) for tourism or business purposes.
Application Process:
Before travelling under the VWP, eligible travellers must apply for an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) through the official government website. The ESTA application collects biographical information and determines the traveller's eligibility to enter the destination country under the VWP.
Passport requirements for the Visa Waiver Program (VWP):
- 1
The passport must have a machine-readable zone on the biographic page.
- 2
The passport must be electronic with a digital chip containing biometric information.
- 3
From April 1, 2016, all travellers must possess an e-passport to use the VWP.
Duration of Stay:
Under the VWP, travellers can stay for up to 90 days per visit for tourism or business purposes. Adhering to the authorised stay period and avoiding overstaying is crucial, as overstaying can result in penalties and affect future travel eligibility.
Are all countries eligible for the Visa Waiver Program (VWP)?
No, eligibility for the VWP is specific to certain countries with agreements in place with the destination country. Travellers should check the official list of eligible countries to determine their eligibility for the program.
Can travelers under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) work or study during their stay?
No, the VWP is only intended for tourism, transit or business purposes. Travellers are not permitted to work or study during their stay under the program.
