About The Irish Passport

Ranking 3rd globally, the Irish passport (Pas Éireannach) is a powerful document that offers its citizens visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 193 destinations worldwide. It unlocks global travel and grants Irish travellers the right to live, work, and move freely across the EU, EEA, and Switzerland, making it an incredibly valuable asset.

Since 2006, all Irish passports have included biometric features, ensuring both security and smooth passage at international borders. In 2015, Ireland introduced the Passport Card, which is a handy, credit-card-sized travel document that functions like an EEA national ID and allows Irish citizens to travel within the EEA and Switzerland without carrying their full passports. With strong diplomatic ties and global recognition, the Irish passport reflects Ireland’s respected place in the world and makes exploring it simpler than ever.

As of 2025, Irish citizens are uniquely privileged. They are the only nationality in the world with an automatic right to live and work in both the European Union and the United Kingdom. This unmatched flexibility makes the Irish passport one of the most valuable travel documents worldwide.

What Does an Irish Passport Look Like?

The Irish passport booklet follows the standard European Union design, featuring a machine-readable identity page and 32 or 66 visa pages. The cover proudly displays the harp, Ireland’s national symbol, with inscriptions in the country’s official languages—Irish and English. At the top, it reads An tAontas Eorpach (European Union), while Éire (Ireland) is prominently printed just above the harp.

In older passport versions, the identity page was on the back cover. However, with enhanced security features, newer Irish passports now have the identity page embedded as a plastic card between the front cover and the first paper page (the “Observations” page).

A formal request for safe passage and assistance is printed inside the passport, reflecting international diplomatic tradition. It reads:

  • In Irish:
Iarrann Aire Gnóthaí Eachtracha agus Trádála na hÉireann ar gach n-aon lena mbaineann ligean dá shealbhóir seo, saoránach d'Éirinn, gabháil ar aghaidh gan bhac gan chosc agus gach cúnamh agus caomhnú is gá a thabhairt don sealbhóir.

  • In English:
The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade of Ireland requests all whom it may concern to allow the bearer, a citizen of Ireland, to pass freely and without hindrance and to afford the bearer all necessary assistance and protection.

Previously, this request was also included in French, but it has since been discontinued in newer passport editions.
