Japan Visa Rules 2026 for Indians: Walk-In Applications Discontinued

If you were planning to show up at your nearest visa application centre with a Japan visa application and submit it the same day — that's no longer possible in most of India.

Which Visa Application Centres Have Ended Walk-Ins?

The change applies to all visa categories: tourist, business, student, dependent, and transit. There are no exceptions based on visa type.

Additionally: From 20 April 2026, the Consulate General of Japan in Mumbai fully delegated all visa application handling to the authorised visa application centre. The Problem with the New Appointment System

The visa application centre releases appointment dates in small batches — typically just 3 days' worth at a time. Japan Visa Fees (Unchanged Despite the Process Change)

The discontinuation of walk-ins doesn't affect fees. The current fee structure for the period April 2025 through March 2026:

Apply 4–6 weeks before travel during peak season. Cherry blossom season (March–April) and autumn foliage (October–November) create the worst bottlenecks. Off-peak months (January–February, June–September) offer significantly better availability.

Don't pay for "guaranteed" slots. the visa application centre has explicitly warned against touts and unauthorized agents selling appointment dates. These services are not affiliated with the visa application centre or the Japanese consulate, and payments to them are non-recoverable.

Have your documents ready before you book. Once you get a slot, the clock starts. Your documents need to be complete, formatted correctly, and ready for submission. Scrambling to prepare after booking wastes valuable time.

Consider alternative centres. If your nearest centre (say, Mumbai) has no availability, check whether Delhi or Kolkata have earlier dates. You can submit at any Japan visa application centre in India, regardless of your residential jurisdiction.

When DIY Makes Sense

If you're applying during off-peak months (January–February or June–September), have experience with the Japan visa process, and your documents are already organised, booking your own appointment and submitting at the visa application centre is perfectly manageable. Slot availability is significantly better outside cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons.
