The Egyptian passport, issued by the Egyptian Ministry of Interior, is the official travel document for citizens of the Arab Republic of Egypt. It serves as proof of Egyptian citizenship and identity, and is required for international travel and re-entry into Egypt. Since 2008, Egypt has issued biometric e-passports that meet ICAO international standards, with embedded chips storing the holder's photograph, fingerprints, and digital signature.
The Egyptian passport ranks among the mid tier passports in the Arab world, with Egypt steadily working to expand bilateral visa agreements particularly across Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Caribbean. Egypt's diplomatic strategy has focused on strengthening ties with African Union partners, GCC neighbours, and emerging economies through CEPA agreements and Arab League cooperation.
Types of Egyptian Passports
Ordinary Passport (green cover): issued to Egyptian citizens for personal and business travel.
Diplomatic Passport (red cover): issued to members of the Egyptian government, ambassadors, and senior diplomats.

Validity of an Egyptian Passport
A standard Egyptian biometric passport is valid for 7 years for adults aged 21 and above. For minors under 21, the validity is also typically 7 years but may be issued with shorter validity in some cases. Egyptian passports can be renewed through any Civil Affairs office across Egypt or at any Egyptian consulate abroad. Most countries require the passport to be valid for at least six months beyond the intended date of departure.
What Does It Look Like?
The standard Egyptian passport has a dark green cover featuring the national emblem of Egypt in gold, depicting the Eagle of Saladin with a shield bearing the colours of the Egyptian flag. The words "PASSPORT" and "Arab Republic of Egypt" are printed in Arabic and English in gold lettering. The cover displays the inscription "جمهورية مصر العربية" in Arabic. Newer Egyptian biometric passports include a polycarbonate data page, advanced security features, and a biometric chip embedded in the cover.

Visa Free Access with an Egyptian Passport
As of 2026, Egyptian passport holders can access 62 destinations without applying for a visa in advance. This includes 22 fully visa free entries and 40 visa on arrival destinations. Egyptian citizens enjoy visa free access to several Arab League nations, Caribbean countries, and select African and Asian destinations including Jordan (with conditions), Malaysia, Indonesia, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Visa on arrival is available in destinations like Bolivia, Cape Verde, Ethiopia, Madagascar, the Maldives, and Nepal. Major destinations that require advance visas for Egyptian citizens include the Schengen Area, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, and most GCC member states.
Passport Strength and Ranking
According to the Atlys Passport Index 2026, the Egyptian passport ranks 77th globally with a mobility score of 62. Egypt sits in the mid tier of African and Arab passports, with mobility comparable to Algeria (72nd) and Jordan, but significantly behind Morocco (59th) and the UAE (1st). The Egyptian passport has seen modest improvement over the past decade as Egypt has signed new visa waiver agreements with countries in Latin America, Southeast Asia, and parts of Africa. The most significant gains have come from holding valid Schengen, UK, or US visas, which now unlock conditional visa free or visa on arrival access to many destinations including Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and several GCC states.
The Egyptian passport reflects Egypt's regional diplomatic positioning and its relationships across the Arab world, Africa, and emerging economies. With access to 62 visa free or visa on arrival destinations, biometric security features, and ongoing diplomatic outreach, the Egyptian passport continues to serve as a reliable travel document for Egyptian citizens, with the GCC remaining the most common destination cluster for work and family travel.
