About Ghana Passports
The Ghanaian passport, issued by Ghana's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, ranked 73rd globally in 2025. Thanks to Ghana’s strengthening international relations and regional partnerships, Ghanaian citizens now enjoy visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to numerous destinations across Africa, the Caribbean, and beyond.
One of the advantages of holding a Ghanaian passport is access to various regional travel agreements that simplify movement within West Africa and parts of the African Union. In 2023, the Ghanaian passport was ranked 80th, but over the past two years, it has risen steadily to the 73rd position, reflecting ongoing improvements in global mobility for Ghanaian travellers.
For comprehensive information, refer to the Ghana passport guide, which covers visa-free countries, passport validity, eTA requirements (such as travel to Seychelles), visa-on-arrival and e-visa options, necessary travel documents, and essential travel guidelines for Ghanaian citizens.
How Long is a Ghanaian Passport Valid?
Ghanaian passports are valid for 10 years. Previously, passports issued in Ghana were valid for 5 years, but the validity period was officially extended to 10 years starting in March 2020. This extension provides greater convenience for travellers, reducing the need for frequent renewals.
What Does a Ghanaian Passport Look Like?
A standard Ghanaian passport (contemporary type) features a hunter green cover. At the top of the cover, you'll find the inscription "ECONOMIC COMMUNITY OF WEST AFRICAN STATES (ECOWAS)" followed by its French equivalent, "COMMUNAUTE ECONOMIQUE DES ETATS DE L'AFRIQUE DE L'OUEST (CEDEAO)".
Below that, the words "REPUBLIC OF GHANA" are printed, followed by the ECOWAS/CEDEAO emblem at the centre.
At the bottom, the text varies depending on the type of passport issued:
"PASSPORT / PASSEPORT" for contemporary (regular) passports
"SERVICE PASSPORT / PASSEPORT DE SERVICE" for service passports
"DIPLOMATIC PASSPORT / PASSEPORT DIPLOMATIQUE" for diplomatic passports.
Each version reflects its purpose while maintaining a consistent and recognisable design rooted in Ghana’s regional and international affiliations.
