Reapplication Basics
Yes. There is no mandatory waiting period for South Africa visa reapplications. However, reapplying without addressing the specific cause of your rejection will result in the same outcome. South Africa's Department of Home Affairs maintains records of prior applications. For biometrics-related rejections (the most common issue in Atlys's ZA case data), the existing application can often be resumed once biometrics are completed — a full reapplication may not be necessary. For other rejection reasons, fix the specific issue first, then reapply.
It depends on your rejection reason. For biometrics failures, complete biometrics immediately — your existing application can proceed without a new submission. For active ETA or duplicate application issues, wait until the existing active visa or ETA expires before applying again. For name format issues or missing travel dates, corrections can typically be made within 1 to 2 days. For character or security flags, do not reapply without specialist review — no time-based wait will resolve a blocking flag.
Yes. South Africa's visa application forms ask about prior refusals. You must declare your previous rejection honestly. More importantly, declaring the prior rejection and explaining what has changed since then is seen positively. A corrected reapplication with a transparent declaration consistently performs better than one that avoids the rejection history. Concealing a prior refusal is treated as providing false information and is itself a ground for refusal.
A rejection for a biometrics failure or missing travel dates has minimal lasting impact on other visa applications, as these are procedural issues corrected quickly. A rejection for a character flag, prior overstay, or security concern has more serious implications and will be noted on other countries' visa forms when you are required to declare prior refusals. Always declare prior refusals honestly and pair them with a clear explanation of what has been resolved.
Understanding Your Rejection
The most common reasons are:
biometrics not completed via the ETA portal (by far the #1 issue)
an active ETA or valid visa already on the passport blocking a new application
minor travellers attempted through the e-visa or ETA route (not eligible)
single-name or name format issues causing portal submission failures
portal OCR errors on the applicant's name
missing or unconfirmed travel dates
passport not meeting requirements
character or security flags
prior refusals not adequately addressed
Incomplete biometrics is the most frequent cause of delayed and failed ZA applications.
The South Africa ETA portal requires applicants to complete a biometric capture step as part of the application process. This involves taking a live photograph using the portal's built-in camera interface, which verifies your presence and captures biometric data linked to your passport. This step cannot be skipped or substituted with a static photo upload — it must be completed live through the portal's camera tool.
This is consistently the most common reason for South Africa application delays: users either fail to open the biometric link, cannot complete the camera capture (technical issues, device incompatibility, poor internet), or do not respond to multiple follow-up attempts. If biometrics are not completed, the application cannot be submitted to South Africa Home Affairs regardless of how complete the rest of the file is.
When Atlys initiates your South Africa ETA application, a QR code or link is sent to you to complete the biometric capture step. You need to open this link on a device with a working front-facing camera (smartphone recommended), follow the on-screen instructions to take a live photograph, and complete the submission. The environment should be well-lit, with a plain background, and your face clearly visible without glasses or headwear.
The biometric window has a validity period — if you do not complete it in time, a new QR code will need to be generated. Atlys proactively sends reminders and re-shares the biometric link multiple times before routing to an alternative processing path. If you have received the QR code and are unable to complete biometrics on your device, contact Atlys immediately so we can troubleshoot the specific issue.
No — not while your existing ETA or visa is still valid. The South Africa Home Affairs system links your ETA to your passport number. If a valid ETA or visa is already on record, a new application submitted before the existing one expires or is used will be flagged as a duplicate and rejected or blocked. This is a recurring issue, particularly for repeat travellers to South Africa. The resolution is straightforward: wait for your current ETA to expire or be used before submitting a new one. If you are no longer travelling on the existing ETA, Atlys can advise on whether it can be voided before expiry.
South Africa's ETA and e-visa routes are not available for minor applicants. Children travelling to South Africa must apply through the traditional visa route via VFS Global in India, which involves a full document submission including a birth certificate, parental consent letter, and in some cases a court order or death certificate if one parent is not travelling. When a minor is included in an ETA or e-visa application, the application is cancelled and rerouted to the appropriate channel. Atlys handles the rerouting to the appropriate processing channel for minor applicants. Do not attempt to reapply for a minor via the ETA or e-visa portal.
South Africa's ETA portal requires a separate given name (first name) and surname (last name) to be entered. If your passport has only a single name (no surname, or the name appears only in one field), the portal cannot process the form correctly and the application fails. Similarly, if the name format in the portal does not match the exact spelling and structure on your passport, the application may fail OCR validation. Single-name passport holders are routed to the FGTG e-visa channel where this constraint is handled manually. If you have a single-name passport, inform Atlys at the time of application so we can route you to the correct processing path from the start.
The South Africa ETA portal uses Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to read details from your uploaded passport. If the OCR system misreads your given name (common for names with unusual characters, spacing, or formatting), the name entered in the system will not match your passport and the application will fail validation. This is a known rejection trigger in ZA applications. The fix requires manual correction of the name field and reprocessing — either through the ETA portal with corrected data or via the FGTG e-visa route where name fields are entered manually.
The South Africa ETA system requires confirmed intended travel dates before the application can be submitted. If your travel dates are null (not provided), undecided, or change after submission, the application cannot proceed. Travel date nulls are a specific delay trigger for ZA applications. Once you confirm your travel dates, Atlys updates the application and proceeds with submission. If your travel date changes significantly after an ETA has been issued, a new ETA application may be required for the updated dates.
Your passport must be valid for at least 30 days beyond your intended departure from South Africa (though 6 months is strongly recommended for comfortable entry). It must have at least one blank visa page. Damaged, heavily worn, or machine-unreadable passports are not accepted. Applications with non-compliant passports are placed in PUD and cannot proceed until a valid passport is provided. If your passport is close to expiry, damaged, or has no blank pages, renew it before applying. Applying on a borderline passport and getting rejected is a worse outcome than renewing before your trip.
Documents and Application
The core requirements for a South Africa e-Visa are:
Passport: Valid for at least 6 months beyond intended stay, with at least one blank visa page. Must be machine-readable.
Live biometric photo: Captured through the ETA portal's biometric tool — not a static upload.
Confirmed travel dates: Specific intended arrival and departure dates.
Purpose of visit: Tourism, business, transit, or visiting friends/family.
Accommodation details: Hotel booking confirmation or host's address for private stays.
Return/onward flight ticket: Confirmed booking showing your departure from South Africa.
Financial proof: Bank statement showing adequate funds for your stay (approximately ZAR 1,000 per day as a general guideline).
Yellow fever vaccination certificate: Required if travelling from or through a yellow fever endemic country.
For traditional VFS visa applications (minors, special cases):
Passport-size photograph (white background)
Completed visa application form
Birth certificate (for minors)
Parental consent letter and supporting documents (for minors)
South Africa's ETA system is designed as a fully digital process to reduce the need for in-person consulate or VFS visits for standard adult applicants. The live biometric capture is integrated into the online portal, allowing applicants to complete the process from any device with a working camera. This is different from countries like Australia where biometrics must be enrolled at a physical VAC. For South Africa ETA, no in-person visit is required for the biometric step. However, this also means technical failures (device compatibility, camera issues, poor connectivity) are the most common barrier — which is why biometrics is the top ZA delay reason.
South Africa Home Affairs expects travellers to have sufficient funds to cover their stay without working illegally in South Africa. As a practical guideline, approximately ZAR 1,000 per day of your intended stay is a commonly cited benchmark, though there is no officially published absolute minimum. Your bank statement should show a consistent balance over the last 3 months with organic transaction activity. Sudden large deposits made close to the application date may raise questions. For business visits, a letter from your employer or the South African host company confirming the purpose and financial sponsorship of the trip is strongly recommended.
Travel insurance is not a mandatory requirement for South Africa visa applications, but it is strongly recommended. South Africa Home Affairs may ask for proof of insurance in some cases, particularly for longer stays. Comprehensive travel insurance covering medical expenses, emergency evacuation, and trip cancellation provides protection against South Africa's relatively high private healthcare costs and reduces the risk of being asked for supplementary documentation during the assessment process.
After Reapplication
For biometrics failures, missing travel dates, and active ETA duplicates, the impact on your record is minimal — these are procedural issues that are understood as non-substantive. Correcting and reapplying promptly is standard. For character flags, security concerns, or prior overstays, the impact is more significant and will be visible on future applications. The most effective way to minimise the impact of any prior rejection is to fix the actual problem, reapply successfully, and build a clean South Africa travel history.
South Africa does not have a formal public appeals tribunal for standard visa rejections in the way some other countries do. If your visa was refused by the Department of Home Affairs, you can submit a written request for reconsideration with additional supporting documentation. For biometrics-level and procedural rejections, a clean reapplication is almost always faster and more effective than a formal reconsideration request. For serious rejections involving a security or character flag, specialist immigration advice may be needed before any further steps are taken. Atlys can advise on the appropriate path for your specific rejection category.
There is no official cap on reapplications. However, repeated reapplications without fixing the root cause create a pattern that immigration systems flag. For biometrics failures, completing biometrics on your existing application is always preferable to starting a new one — it avoids a fresh application record. For other rejection reasons, fix the specific issue, reapply once with a clean file, and contact Atlys if the second attempt also fails. Atlys will conduct a full review before recommending any further submission.
Most other African countries' visa systems are independent of South Africa's, and a South Africa e-visa rejection is not directly shared with other African immigration systems. However, if you are required to declare prior refusals on a new application (which some African and non-African countries require), a substantive rejection (security flag, prior overstay) must be disclosed. A procedural rejection (biometrics incomplete, duplicate ETA) that was resolved and followed by a successful South Africa visa is generally treated as a closed matter and carries minimal cross-destination impact.
Recovery with Atlys
Atlys begins with a diagnostic of your rejection. For biometrics failures — the most common ZA issue — we immediately re-share the biometric QR code, troubleshoot any device or connectivity issues you faced, and stay on it until biometrics are completed. For active ETA or duplicate rejections, we confirm the status of your existing visa and advise on the earliest date a new application can be submitted. For name format and OCR issues, we reroute your application to the FGTG manual processing channel where name fields are entered directly. For minor travellers, we initiate the VFS traditional visa route immediately. For character or security flags, we route you to the appropriate specialist.
You do not pay anything upfront to start your recovery with Atlys. We diagnose your case, fix the specific issue, and resubmit your application. You only pay once your visa is approved and the packet is uploaded. If your visa is rejected again despite our work, you receive a full refund including any fees paid. This model ensures our incentives are fully aligned with getting your visa approved, not just processing paperwork.
For biometrics failures, Atlys can re-share the biometric link within hours — once you complete biometrics, the application typically processes within 3 to 5 business days. For name format and OCR issues, rerouting to the FGTG manual channel typically adds 2 to 4 business days. For active ETA duplicates, the timeline depends on when your existing ETA expires. For VFS traditional visa (minor travellers), the processing time is longer — typically 10 to 15 business days after document submission at the VFS centre. We will give you a specific timeline after reviewing your rejection reason and current application status.
This is the most common ZA case pattern in Atlys's data. If you have received the biometric QR code but cannot complete the step, the first thing to try is switching to a smartphone (preferably Android) with a clear front-facing camera and a stable internet connection. Avoid using desktop browsers for the biometric step. Make sure you are in a well-lit environment and not using a VPN. If the link has expired, contact Atlys immediately — we can regenerate a new QR code. If the issue is device-specific and cannot be resolved after multiple attempts, Atlys will route your application to the FGTG e-visa channel, which processes your application without requiring the biometric portal step. Do not leave the biometric step pending without communicating with Atlys — applications left in biometrics-pending status for too long are cancelled and require a fresh start.
